ISRM/City & Guilds Higher Professional Diploma Who is this course intended for?
National Extension College courses are specifically designed in a format that allows you to study at your own pace, in your own time, wherever you wish. This course is the ideal qualification to help you progress in your career if you are a sport and recreation facilities manager or supervisor or if you want to enter the sport and recreation profession in a management role. As the Diploma is a high-level qualification, and although there are no formal entry requirements, we recommend that you have one of the following:
- a Level 3 S/NVQ in Sport and Recreation or equivalent
- an Advanced Vocational Certificate in Education (AVCE) in Leisure/Sport or similar
- experience of working in sport and recreation in a supervisory role
What will I gain from this course?
There are 12 units in total. Nine are mandatory, the tenth is a choice of one out of two units and the final two units are a choice from five. For details see below.

Whether you are working towards a specific qualification or simply studying for pleasure, you can be assured that NEC will be with you every step of the way.
Taking an NEC course means there are a number of people to help you. You will be assigned a personal tutor, an experienced teacher, who will provide regular feedback by marking your assignments. You can contact your tutor by email or phone. The NEC course co-ordinators can help with administrative queries, although your Student Handbook, Exam Book and Course Guide will also help you to answer many of your questions relating to the course and what's involved.
NEC provides tutor support to all students for up to two years, which means that you can work at your own pace, when and where suits you best.
In addition, all students receive access to NEC's Online Study Centre (OSCr). You will be given joining instructions when you enrol. Once you have signed up, you will be able to take part in online discussions and chat to other students taking the same course as you.
Your course materials will contain:
- an introductory letter with details about the personal tutor who will be assisting you in your learning
- a study guide and student handbook containing valuable study skills advice
- a total of 9 core units and 3 optional units that are structured to help you learn

How long will the course take?
The length of time spent doing a course will vary from person to person, but we provide tutor support for up to two years. The course contains 12 assignments.
Will I need any additional materials?
The course is self-contained so you will be able to work through it without having to use extra textbooks.
How do I register for exam entry?
There are no formal examinations but each unit is assessed on line by a final tutor-marked assignment and moderated by City and Guilds.

The ISRM/City & Guilds Higher Professional Diploma is the most widely respected and popular professional qualification in this sector. This certificate also entitles you to membership of the Institute of Sports and Recreation Management after two years work experience. Joining the Institute gives you access to professional development courses, events and seminars as well as news about the latest developments in the sport and recreation sector.
Successfully completing this course also leads to the award of the City & Guilds Higher Professional Diploma in Sport and Recreation Management (4443).
